Buying and selling used motorcycle gear safely
Published on June 8, 2026 · Motardia
Motorcycle gear is expensive new. Buying second-hand lets you kit up better for less, or sell what's gathering dust in the garage. The trick is to buy and sell smart. Here are the right reflexes for safe deals between enthusiasts.
What buys very well second-hand
- Jackets and trousers: quality leather and textile age well. Check the seams, zips and that the armour is present.
- Boots: often lightly worn, they make great deals.
- Luggage: top boxes, panniers, mounts… sturdy and easy to inspect.
- Intercoms and accessories: ask about the real battery life.
- Parts: plenty of parts turn up second-hand at a fraction of the price — as long as you confirm exact compatibility with your model.
What you do NOT buy used
- The helmet. This is the absolute rule. A helmet may have taken an invisible impact (dropped off the bars, knocked in transit) that compromised the inner shell. You don't trust your head to a stranger. Buy it new, full stop.
- Armour that has already been "down": a back protector or insert that absorbed an impact is single-use.
- Very old tyres: rubber hardens over time, even without wear. Check the date code (DOT).
Buying without getting burned: the checklist
- Real, sharp photos: from several angles, with labels and standards visible. Beware of "catalogue" photos.
- Exact size and reference: gear needs trying on. Ask for real measurements if you can't try it.
- The state of wear points: zips, linings, soles, armour. An honestly disclosed flaw beats a nasty surprise.
- The reason for selling: a transparent seller answers straight.
- In-person handover when possible: you see the item, try it, pay with confidence.
Selling fast and at the right price
- Nail the photos: natural light, neutral background, close-ups of any flaws. That's 80% of the listing.
- Describe precisely: brand, size, year, standards, condition, reason for selling. The clearer it is, the more it reassures.
- Set a fair price: look at comparable listings. Too high, the listing stalls; too low, you lose out.
- Reply quickly: responsiveness is the difference between a sale and a buyer moving on.
Why a community changes everything
Motorcycle gear sells and buys better between riders. A seller who rides knows how to describe a jacket, knows a brand's sizing, understands your need. Unlike generic classifieds, a dedicated motorcycle marketplace brings together people who speak the same language — and who have a reputation to keep within the community.
That's exactly the spirit of Motardia: rider profiles with reviews and history, listings filtered by category (helmets, jackets, parts…), and messaging to negotiate directly. You buy and sell with confidence, because you're dealing with real enthusiasts.
In short
Second-hand is a great way to gear up… provided you never buy a used helmet, check the real condition and favour transparent sellers. On the selling side, good photos, an honest description and a fair price do everything.
